about patterned earth

Brian Roberts

Based near Holmfirth on the northern edge of the Peak District, patterned earth is a new garden and landscape design studio founded by me, Dr Brian Roberts, working with clients across Northern England. I design gardens that feel like they belong — to their surroundings, and to the people who call them home.

Growing up on the edge of the East Lancashire moors, landscapes, gardens and gardening have always been part of mine and my family’s story. In 2023, I followed in my brother’s landscape architectural footsteps, studying at the Yorkshire School of Garden Design at Harewood House under Alistair Baldwin, graduating with a distinction. My final project — a reworking of a Thomas Mawson garden in Grasmere — was shortlisted for the 2026 Society of Garden and Landscape Designers Awards.

My work draws on that personal connection to landscape: local character, natural patterns, and plants and materials that sit comfortably within their setting. For you, that means a garden shaped around how you want to live outdoors, with places to gather, space to unwind and room for nature to thrive.

Perhaps your garden isn’t working for you, you’re struggling to see its potential, or you have plenty of ideas but don’t know where to start. I help you make sense of the possibilities and turn them into a clear, considered design. From early ideas through to detailed design and aftercare, I guide you through decisions about layout, planting, materials and budget, including how much gardening you want to take on.

Before becoming a garden designer, I built a career leading complex digital and data projects across the NHS. I bring that experience into my work with clients: listening carefully, communicating clearly, planning thoughtfully and coordinating the details that help bring a garden to life. Underpinning both careers is my belief in the difference our surroundings can make to our wellbeing.

Don’t settle for a garden that could be from anywhere. Find your somewhere with patterned earth.
