Grasmere

the place

the brief

Its owners wanted an understated and unforced garden that honours Mawson’s intent yet feels modern, functional and welcoming - a place for quiet reflection, social gathering and everyday living within nature.

Accessible routes, comfortable seating and spaces for entertaining, relaxation and gardening were key. Existing terraces reused, views eopened and the dipping pool reinstated. Mature trees retained, materials sourced locally and planting restrained, tied to local habitats.

Wren's Nest is a new architect-designed home in Grasmere, set within a historic Thomas Mawson garden in the South Lakes, a stone's throw from Wordsworth's Dove Cottage.
