how we work

our creative approach

At patterned earth, we approach every project with senses heightened - listening, observing and recognising patterns in nature, landscapes, buildings and peoples’ relationships with them.

We like to build upon these often-untapped rhythms, to reveal the essence of each place, elevating them through beautiful, innovate design.

we love to draw

We appreciate the artistic and bespoke nature of great design. For us, the process of design is just as important as the finished product.

Doing things as well as we can, rather than as fast as possible is key. Quality over quantity. While we use computers to aid our designs, we still draw by hand as a key part of our creative process.

all our creations share the secret of somewhere

Gardens and landscapes at home in their wider settings, functional and beautiful in equal measure.

Lines are often blurred, connecting homes and gardens with broader environments.

Boundaries can be permeable, and materials found locally and sustainably.

Planting is simple, elegant and often drawn directly from wider landscapes, with all the benefits of resilience and biodiversity that this brings.

Ours are gardens of restraint and light-handedness, celebrating nature, which stand the test of time.

our design process

Every project starts with a conversation and a site visit. This is our opportunity to explore your vision. Maybe you want space to relax with friends and family ? A place for your children to play outdoors? Or somewhere where you can exercise your own green fingers?

Whatever your vision, we get to know you and understand what you want to achieve. We’ll get a feel for your garden, your priorities, discuss your preferred timeline, budget and any likely planning requirements. You’ll then receive a written design brief and our proposal.

getting to know you

We measure up the site, taking numerous photographs and producing a survey that records the positions of existing structures, trees, utilities and changes in level. We also record the sense of place, emotional connections, views, micro-climates, the sun path's and more.

On larger sites, in discussion with you, we may commission a surveyor on your behalf to make the detailed site analysis. These surveys will be at the core of any new design.

measuring up

Based on our analysis and your vision, we’ll work from a brief to produce a conceptual design – also known as the masterplan - with visuals and mood boards to discuss, consider options and amend with you.

We expect our design to change and evolve as we carry on our conversation with you.

developing a design

With concept agreed, plans are developed into construction drawings. Each element is considered in detail, including bespoke features, material choices and furniture.

Another key part of the detail is planting design. We follow our ‘right landscape, right plant, right place’ design principle to create planting designed to suit your garden’s unique growing conditions and overall aesthetic.

Together all sets of drawings and plans come back to you, for you to take forward if you've chosen our sketch service. Or, if you're staying with us on our sculpt service, they'll go to contractors and plant nurseries to accurately cost the scheme.

getting into the detail

If you've stayed with us on the sculpt service, as your advocate, we’ll source trusted local contractors, engineers and craftsmen who share our principles and passion for quality.

We’ll organise quotes from recommended contractors and help you through the tender process.

If you already have someone in mind, we’ll guide you through the tender process.

securing a contractor

With the hard landscaping of your new garden realised by a tried and trusted local team, on the sculpt service, we’ll oversee the build on your behalf. We make regular site visits throughout this phase, checking every detail of the design as it unfolds, and resolving any problems on the spot.

This includes liaising with contractors and yourself throughout the building phase to ensure the correct specification and quality of the works.

project managing installation

On the sculpt service, we'll access our network of recommended plant nurseries and wholesalers, providing lists of of our recommended stockists, full quotes for plants to be supplied and arrangements made for plants to be delivered to site at the right time.

Depending on the project schedule, gardens are often planted up on or close to completion of the building works. As part of our service we attend site at planting time to ensure that all shrubs, plants and trees are of top quality, manage how plants are 'set out' and plant them carefully to give them the best start in life.
