Slaithwaite

the place

client brief

"Transform our outdoor space from the blank canvas of a new build into a secret garden, with twists, turns and meandering paths; in a garden with a relaxed feel that’s not over controlled"

A new build, semi-detached york stone property in the hills overlooking Slaithwaite in the Colne Valley, West Yorkshire

a garden of movement

the site

Private, NW facing garden and patio, approximately 9m by 12m, tapering towards the back, with an L shaped side garden around 6m long. With compacted bare earth due to building works

concept

Inspired by the meandering becks, paths and folds of Pennine landscapes, the winding gradually emerges through a rhythm of concealment and discovery; each bend offering glimpses of what lies beyond.

atmosphere and planting

Richly layered, the garden rewards curiosity and repeated visits with new perspectives, seasonal interest and fresh experiences throughout the year.

the design

Path, plant and place work as one, guiding exploration and flow. Boundaries blur, spaces expand and contract. Trees, shrubs and perennials weave together, conjuring a garden that feels larger than its physical dimensions suggest.
