weathering heights
Belvoir Castle Flower & Garden Show, 2026

the place
the brief
For this year's “Countryside Borders” competition, the judges are looking for unique interpretation on the theme of 'pollinators'.
Designs should reflect the designer’s experience, work and personality, with planting suitable for mid-July display. Wildlife-friendly and climate-responsive ideas are encouraged, with strong planting composition and storytelling.
The exposed, pastoral upland edges of Brontë country, where dry-stone walls shape light, shelter and life. A landscape where life endures through adaptation rather than abundance
life shaped by wind, wall and weather
the site

Inspired by the moorland around Top Withens: the isolated farmhouse long associated with Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights

concept
Weathering Heights conjures a landscape supporting contrasting expressions of heath and moorland flora. Pollination is not decorative, but essential: a quiet exchange carried by wind, insects and movement through the wall.
the design
The garden explores the threshold between shelter and exposure.
On the cooler northern side, planting is restrained and persistent — ferns, grasses and moorland species adapted to shade, wind and thinner soils. To the south, sun-warmed ground favours more floriferous and nectar-rich planting, creating moments of colour, movement and pollinator activity across the wall.

the details

Dry-stone walls, weathered gritstone, meadow grasses and upland planting draw directly from the textures and ecologies of the Pennine edge.
The palette is intentionally restrained — shaped less by ornament than by endurance, seasonality and ecological exchange.
