Based near Holmfirth on the northern edge of England's Peak District national park, patterned earth is a new landscape and garden design studio founded by me, Dr Brian Roberts.
Having grown up on the edge of the moors of East Lancashire, landscapes, gardens and gardening have always been in mine and my family's history. In 2023, I finally decided to follow in my brother's landscape architectural footsteps, to study landscape and garden design at the Yorkshire School of Garden Design (YSGD) - based at Harewood House - under Alistair Baldwin, one of the UK's leading designers. There I took on a range of projects across northern England, from a Thomas Mawson garden in Grasmere, to an arts and crafts garden in York, and even one in Harewood's own walled garden, due for renovation in coming years.
Prior to becoming a garden designer, I've had a first career in health and social care, in recent years leading large UK digital and data science projects across the NHS. In 2021 I'm pleased to say I received two national awards for work leading a new UK first data research service supporting the UK's response to the recent COVD-19 pandemic. I'd like to think I now bring my strong research, project management, communication and coordination skills, plus my own deeply held belief in the restorative power nature, to my work in garden design.
Since receiving my YSGD diploma with distinction in July 2024, I've shared my time starting patterned earth (becoming a SGLD pre-registered member), whilst continuing further study in RHS horticulture and permaculture with the Permaculture Association, and also continuing to work part time in the NHS in Manchester.
